Term 2, Week 4, 2016

To use a Game of Thrones phrase “Winter is Coming”, in fact I’m pretty sure it’s here! It was very nice to see the snow upon the Tararua ranges earlier this week. It’s been another great week at school despite the regular rain and cooler temperatures. Our two construction projects continue to forge ahead and we are hoping to have the canopy on Te Kete Tangaroa and the new classroom to form Te Kete Pounamu completed in the coming weeks, which will be very exciting. Also I have exciting news surrounding Kapa Haka. We will look to be reigniting the Kapa Haka flame here at Hokowhitu School very shortly. The tragic passing of Pa Dawson Tamatea last year meant a halt for our Kapa Haka roopu. We have now secured a new kaiako to oversee and teach Kapa Haka to our students with the blessing of Andrea & Sarah Tamatea who have both kindly offered their services to the roopu when they can. We really appreciate that we can still maintain this link with the Tamatea whanau.

Wow, what an exciting week we have had here at Hokowhitu School. We have had a range of visitors eager to come and share their experiences with our children. Tim, Harold and the Life Education mobile classroom left on Thursday. Our Tararua team were treated to a visit by Big Harold the giraffe. The feedback on Life Education from students and staff alike was extremely positive and we look forward to seeing Tim and Harold next year. Tararua 1 also had a visit from Ronald McDonald yesterday. Ronald was here to educate our youngest learners about Road Safety. We have also had a specialist coach in from Netball Manawatu to develop our student’s netball skills. It’s wonderful to see all of these people interacting and enjoying their time with our students. I’d also like to welcome our two new Massey University College Teachers Sam Cameron and Kayla Cousins who are in TKM and Ruma Toru respectively. We hope they have an enjoyable practicum here and enjoy all the fantastic opportunities that Hokowhitu School provides.

Week one has come and gone and we have flown into week two. The Life Education Trust mobile classroom has been in at school this week and the feedback from both the students and staff has been extremely positive. The sun continues to shine and the winter thus far has been kept at bay. It has been great for me to hear the chatter amongst the student’s about how their Saturday Sport went. Nothing better than walking around the school hearing “I got three tries” and “I got four goals”. My favourite quote though this week was from a Year 2 student chatting with his friends on Monday morning when he announced very proudly to his friends“ We had heaps of oranges at halftime” that comment made my day. Also huge congratulations to Ruma Rua Teacher Jay Stella who graduated on Wednesday. Miss Stella has made a fantastic start to her teaching career and we are very lucky to have her here at Hokowhitu School.

Welcome back to Term 2. It’s great to see all of the children and staff back safe, smiling and refreshed. What fantastic weather we have had over the holidays. I’m sure that we all hope that the winter stays away as long as possible. A huge welcome also to new families that have started at Hokowhitu School this term. Mrs Dixon has begun her much-deserved sabbatical and I feel honoured to be leading our wonderful school this term in her absence.
