Term 3, Week 3 - 2021
13 August, 2021 by Hokowhitu School
CONGRATULATIONS
Our school was very ably represented at this year’s Mathex competition, held this morning at the Awapuni
racecourse.
Each school enters their very best mathematician/problem solvers/team players and it is a highly competitive
session with approximately 30 teams in each year group.
Our sincere congratulations to:
Y6: Peyton B, Krystal J, Emily K and Ettiene D. This team finished in a stunning 2nd place, only 1 point behind
the winning team.
Y5: Jake Z, Bradley P, Emily Z and Lena M. This team finished in a very creditable 14th place. Well Done!
The wider squad that supported these teams included Boston D, Fergus M, Indigo W and Josh T.
Congratulations and thank you to these people too.

BASIC FACT-A THON
We hope that the children are making progress with practising their basic facts (and gaining sponsorship to
support their efforts along the way). Improving basic facts/tables and number knowledge is HUGELY beneficial
to success in mathematics and so we have come up with a way to provide an incentive for the children to
improve their recall and accuracy. There will be a prize for the person with the highest sponsorship.
We encourage the children to be practising the basic fact sheet (at their level) both at home and at school -
ready for the test on the 13th August.
ALL SPONSORSHIP FORMS (even if they don’t have any sponsors recorded) MUST be returned to school by next
Friday - ready to be marked off.

We also opened up our final New Entrant class for 2021 this week. Mrs Merryn Hawkins and Mrs Michelle

CELEBRATING LEARNING
As a follow up to mid-year reports being sent home, we invite you to come along to school and have the opportunity to
chat with each of your child’s teachers and see the learning going on in the kete. While it is not essential (if you have
calendar clashes), we try to even out numbers by requesting the A-L and M-Z surnames split over the two evenings.

MATARIKI CELEBRATION
One of our new traditions at school has been to plant a tree over Matariki. The whole school came out in support and 4 of
our students assisted with the planting of a kowhai tree. Our Kapa Haka roopu also performed. Thanks to Mrs Blay and
Mr Masoe for their work in preparation for this occasion.
Last night was also our whānau hui evening - an opportunity for our Māori whānau to come along to school and share
their ideas and aspirations for the tamariki here who are of Māori descent. We thank those of you who were able to
attend and korero with us.
