The Virtues Project at Hokowhitu School

What is the Virtues Project?

This is a positive, comprehensive programme used in many countries and cultures around the world to bring out the best in children. Our reference for this is the book “The Virtual Project: Educators Guide” by Linda Kavelin Popov. Further information is available from the Virtues Project website http://www.virtuesproject.com/index.php

The Virtues Project is designed to help schools create a positive, empowering culture in which children are able to learn and grow. Children will learn about their strength virtues (the ones that they are able to put into action) and their challenge virtues (the ones which need to be developed). Our task is to speak the language of the virtues in positive and supportive ways (“do’s” rather than don’ts”) that facilitates the development of virtues as a natural part of life.

The aim to develop a total environment of caring and respect that is integrated through every aspect of our school life. All students will be encouraged to live by the virtues. Note that the Virtues Project is not a religious education programme.

School Charter

The aims of the Virtues Project fit very neatly with our school vision as expressed in our Charter.

For example:

“Our school

• Encourages children to learn in a supportive, caring and positive environment.

• Attends to children's emotional as well as intellectual needs.

• Has a safe, happy environment for children, in a warm, welcoming and relaxed family atmosphere, where children feel important as individuals and as part of a team.”

and

“Kete 1: “A Great Place for Kids!”

We will:

◦ Provide a secure and safe environment.

◦ Provide positive role models and expect high standards of social skills and behaviour.

◦ Encourage and model and practice positive social interactions everyday in our classroom.

◦ Care.

◦ Value diversity.”
